Recognizing Signs Of Anxiety In Yourself Or Your Senior
nxiety disorders can develop due to a variety of risk factors, including but not limited to brain chemistry, genetics, personality, and certain life events, and affect 40 million adults in the United States alone making it the most common mental illness there is.
If you or your senior parent or loved one who receives elder care at home are finding yourselves feeling anxious, you are certainly not alone. Understanding what anxiety is and how it can show up in your life is vital so that you can be prepared to recognize the signs and know how to handle it if you start seeing them in your senior or even feeling symptoms yourself as a caregiver.
Common signs of Anxiety:
- Sleep disorders: having trouble falling or staying asleep, or racing thoughts as you try to clear your mind at night for sleep.
- Heart issues (increased heart rate/palpitations): Noticing that your heart seems to be racing for no apparent reason or feel like your heart is beating in an irregular rhythm.
- Regular feelings of being nervous: Finding yourself in a constant state of worry or feeling restless or nervous about something even if you can’t exactly pinpoint the reason.
- Fear: Having a sense of impending danger, panic, or doom and always feeling like you are on high alert or waiting for something bad to happen.
- Body changes: Noticing that you are sweating, trembling, breathing rapidly, or even experiencing physical symptoms such as gastrointestinal discomfort or problems.
- Social Changes: Finding yourself going out of your way to avoid certain situations that may trigger feelings of anxiety or isolating yourself from other people more often than usual.
- Feelings of exhaustion: Realizing that you are not able to produce the kind of energy you once had, and feeling tired no matter what you do or how much sleep that you get.
If you are feeling anxious, or are noticing any of the above signs of anxiety in your senior parent or loved one, there are things that you can do to help alleviate stress in your life and ways to calm your mind so that you can start feeling less anxious.
