What a Home Care Agency Might Need to Know About the Senior They Support
When you hire a home care agency to look after your spouse, elderly parent, or other loved one, they will likely have a number of questions for you. Of course, you are going to have plenty of questions, too, but what about those things they need to know?
Even though they are experienced and have likely worked with hundreds, possibly even thousands of seniors already through the years, each person is different. Every person is unique.
So, let’s take a look at some of the things a home care agency may need to know about your elderly loved one so they can provide the best, most accurate, and exceptional level of support and care possible.
Specific health issues the senior is facing.
This doesn’t mean you have to disclose everything about yourself, an aging parent, or other individual when you hire home care, but where health issues are the key component in why home care is necessary, then this is something you should share.
Remember, the law states that nobody has to disclose their personal health information with anybody, even a home care provider. Unfortunately, if you don’t share pertinent information, the home care aide’s effectiveness will be limited.
For example, if the senior is recovering from a bout of pneumonia and you don’t disclose that to the home care provider, they won’t know to make sure the senior rests or what the doctor has prescribed or instructions he or she gave to the senior.
The senior’s desires for activity.
Just because a person is older doesn’t mean they have to stop living life to the fullest. And, even though this particular senior in your life is dealing with chronic health issues, injuries sustained in an accident, or other physical limitations doesn’t mean they have to sit around and do nothing.
At the same time, though, certain health issues, like pneumonia, require the senior to rest for a period of time, otherwise they could give the virus or bacteria a chance to reestablish itself.
If the senior likes to go for walks in the park or around the block, make sure the home care provider understands this. That way he or she can determine when it is safe to do so and provide the physical assistance to make sure that senior is safe on those activities.
Specific anxieties or worries a senior may have.
An elderly person may have social anxiety. So, if the home care aide doesn’t understand this and they encourage the senior to get out and go for a walk at a local park or a mall nearby or to assist them with grocery shopping, they might not be prepared for the issues that can arise later.
Be specific about any challenges an elderly person is facing when you look into home care for them. A home care agency that is experienced and qualified will also have a list of questions that help them provide the best level of support for each specific senior they care for.
